I've been trying to figure something deep and meaningful to write for the Hop Against Homophobia and you know what? I'm not deep. So, I'll have to go with blunt honesty.

There has been some internet talk that this Hop was conceived as a marketing ploy. Was it? Don't know, don't care. What I know is this is something I wanted to support for no other reason than homophobia is stupid and it needs to go.

As I was struggling to decide what to write I happened upon this on Facebook...it really touched me.
I began to think about why some people might dislike anyone GLBT, and valid reasons to dislike another person.

Reasons not to like someone: because you have nothing in common, or they're jerks.

However, don't make your judgement based on their gender, or religion or color.

Don't base your judgement on the books you might see on this hop on the gender, or religion or color of the person writing it. Look at the blurbs, read the excerpts. If the plot doesn't appeal, move on. If the writing style isn't what you like, there are others that likely will.

I challenge everyone perusing the sites and blogs on this hop to pay no attention to the name of the author. Don't do to the hundreds of authors in this hop what is being done to all the people in this world who are not straight.

Don't buy my books because that was not my intention for joining this hop. My intention was to point out how wrong it is to base your judgement on another individual simply because of who they may love.

I will happily give to two people an ebook, the winners can pick anything off my backlist. I'll pick the winners next week. Simply comment below.

Enjoy your weekend and remember to do unto others as you'd like done to you.

Elizabeth

I so completely agree. Who cares if it is a marketing ploy, though this is first I've heard that it could be. If marketing can cure a problem, then market, market way.

Good post. I am working my way through the hop, zigging and zagging all over the place. I've read sad posts, happy posts, funny posts. I dont comment on all but aim to read all by sunday night - as you say, its the message thats important. - different people deliver the mesage in different ways, not right or wrong ways.

This blog hop is huge and every post is meaningful so it's taking a lot of time to get through. That's a good thing! I'm really enjoying reading the different stories, experiences and thoughts being posted. I don't know or care if someone did dream this up as a marketing ploy, the hop participants are doing an amazing job!

Marketing ploy? That is so weird. It is important that the topic gets more publicity and that people are made aware of this and nothing else

I haven't heard about a marketing ploy before now, but I've found the whole hop very thought-provoking thus far. Either way, if tolerance is a by-product, it's a good thing.

I never thought it was a marketing ploy. I know how supportive authors are of one another and their readers. I just saw the blog hop as an extention of that.

Marketing ploy? No. We're collectively raising our voices against something we as a human race should be ashamed of. Thank you for clarifying the hop's reason as well.

Personally I think it does not matter why the hop was formed as long as it spreads the word. The best way to share something with the masses is to give something away! M/M books and the community changed my life. I now speak up for those that are wronged instead of turning the other cheek. I pray one day everyone can live as equals.

I saw the comments about the hop being a marketing ploy and was shocked that anyone could even suggest it. I am hoping to visit every blog over the weekend (though I am wondering if I will run out of time) and have seen nothing but generosity.

Sharing of stories and personal experiences.
Sharing of time and resources.
Donations to worthwhile causes in support of GLBT rights.

I do wonder if that vocal commenter has actually visited any of the blogs and whether they have been convinced that people have signed up to try to make a difference in the world rather than as a marketing ploy.

The purpose was always to raise awareness and never a marketing ploy, to use our reach to share our views and to offer prizes as an incentive to get people to come over and read the messages. There's no way that a person going through all the blogs is going to remember the names or the books of the sites they're visiting. I haven't gone through all, but the ones I've gone through haven't posted a huge photo of their books to try to market them. They're all about the message.

I was very upset when I saw it suggested, but it also taught me a thing or two to watch out for next year's hop.

Anyway, just wanted to say that I LOVE that image you found. I've never seen it before.

That image with two rings is spot on to how I feel. It shouldn't matter. And even if this was a marketing ploy, if that gets the message out there than so be it. This is something that needs to be talked about no matter how the topic is introduced. People need to start realizing that judging and hating anyone for anything that's not their behavior is never ok. I won't say we can't hate, because sometimes you do, but at least let the person have earned that dislike honestly and not just because you see them and automatically assume they're jerks or freaks. So I hope that hops like this can maybe change at least one person's outlook, that's something.

Thanks so much for sharing. I love that pic especially!! And I've heard the naysayers who say it is a publicity ploy so I admire what you did by saying don't buy my books, just hear what I have to say. Thanks again for sharing and participating!
