Sensations of light and sound slithered into Kyle’s brain. His throat was parched and he had the idea he needed to open his eyes. It was reinforced by a voice, Daniel, gently informing him it was time to wake up now. Stretching his ribcage and legs, Kyle immediately regretted that move. Sharp jabs of pain stabbed through his torso and turning his head toward Daniel’s voice made his head throb. “Hey, buddy, how are you feeling?” Daniel was holding Kyle’s hand. He leaned forward and swiped his free hand through Kyle’s hair, brushing his bangs to the side. He left me. “I’m so sorry, Kyle, what I did, it was stupid and childish and dumb, and if I could take it back and change it, I would. Please, Kyle, I don’t want to be without you.” He left me. He left me. Licking his lips, Kyle managed to rasp out in a wrecked voice, “Drink of water?” He left me. “Sure. Of course, anything.” Leaning to the side Daniel produced a small cup of water and held it for Kyle, letting go of his hand and cupping the back of Kyle’s head so he could drink. As soon as the water was gone, Daniel asked, “More?” Kyle carefully shook his head no. Daniel shifted in the chair beside the bed he occupied, reaching out and settling his hand over Kyle’s. He left me. Jerking his hand away and tucking it under the blankets covering him, Kyle closed his eyes. “Go away.” “Ky—” “Go away. Leave. It’s what you’re good at. Leave me alone.” “Ky, I—” “Now.” Daniel sighed and Kyle heard his feet shuffle along the floor as he stood up. The scrape of the chair legs sent shivers through Kyle. He didn’t want Daniel to leave, he never had, but he wasn’t going to live wondering when the next time would be, either. Heavy, slow footsteps crossed the room. Kyle cracked opened his eyes and rolled his head on the pillow, turning to the sound of the door opening. When Daniel looked back over his shoulder for a few seconds before slipping through the door and closing it quietly behind him, Kyle squeezed his eyes shut and didn’t bother wiping away the tears sliding down his cheeks.
