This week's snippet is from Whiskey and Moonshine! Mal took the seat on Colt’s other side and rested his hand on Colt’s back for a few seconds until the servers began distributing plates. “Lighten up, Jeffery. I doubt Colt is planning on taking over our social media and spreading vile rumors about me.” Mal turned to face Colt completely. “You’re not, are you?” “Um… I don’t think I even know how to do something like that,” Colt confessed. “See, Jeffery, it’s fine,” Mal assured Mr. Grice. A tight band in Colt’s chest loosened and fell away. Having Mal’s trust was more important to him than he could put into words, and this proof gave Colt a much-needed boost of confidence. He’d been fluctuating between believing he could and couldn’t do this job the right way ever since his haircut. He wanted desperately to succeed, to make Mal happy and be a benefit to the distillery. Blurb As the new head coach of the Vancouver Orcas, Matt Shore has got his work cut out for him. Coming off a season where the Orcas came in last in the entire AHL, Matt’s job is to whip his new hockey team into shape for the oncoming season. He doesn’t need any distractions, especially not one in the form of a tall, dark, and gorgeous antiques dealer. Who’s also his ex—and his best player’s father. Pierce Langley-Brown has a lot of regrets. The biggest? Leaving Matt behind two years ago when his son needed him. Now, with his son on Matt’s hockey team, there’s no avoiding the man who once owned his heart. Not that Pierce wants to avoid him. And that heart? It still belongs to Matt. But will Matt choose to keep it after all this time? Content warnings: past parental death (off-page but is discussed on-page); depression and mental health Excerpt “What do you think?” Matt slowed as they approached the entrance to Kitsilano Beach Park. The parking lot was mostly empty at this time of day. “Should we park here or find street parking farther down?” “Doesn’t matter,” Pierce muttered. “We both know I’ll only last five minutes.” Matt grinned and pulled into the parking lot. “Not to worry. We’ll build your stamina in no time.” Speaking of stamina . . . Matt scratched at his thigh, drawing Pierce’s gaze. He swallowed hard. Sipped his coffee. Eyed Matt’s profile as Matt backed into a spot. “What kind of strenuous activities do you expect me to be doing that I’ll need stamina?” Putting the car in park, Matt side-eyed him. “Increasing your stamina helps reduce fatigue. Allows you to perform your daily activities at a higher level while using less energy.” “Uh-huh.” Amused at the non-answer, Pierce sipped more coffee, hiding a grin behind his mug. “Is that all?” Huffing, Matt popped his door open. “Get out of the car, LB.” Pierce let his laughter loose, feeling giddy and happy and like Matt’s laughter gave him superpowers. Until they got a few minutes into their jog. “I’m—” Huff. “—dying.” Huff. “Jogging is . . .” Huff. “Good exercise?” Matt prompted, not the least bit winded. “Torture.” Matt chuckled, but he slowed to a fast walk. Other joggers and cyclists passed them, but Pierce didn’t care much about anything other than gulping big breaths of air. On their left, the sandy beach was dotted with wooden logs for seating, and the ocean was calm under a blue sky peppered with the occasional cloud. In the distance, the mountains rose, tall and green. Pierce sucked in a deep breath of ocean-tinted air, held it, and released it in a long sigh. “How did you survive in landlocked Laval for two years?” Matt asked “Technically, it’s not landlocked. Laval is mostly on an island across the Prairies River from Montreal. It’s not the same, but there are waterfronts. I did miss home, though. It’s good to be back.” “Yet you’d still move with Jason if he got traded again?” Pierce blinked at Matt. “What makes you say that?” “You sort of implied it,” Matt said, suddenly finding a hangnail interesting. “When you said you moved back here because Jason did.” “Oh, well . . . I mean, generally, parents don’t follow their kids around, right? Especially when those kids reach adulthood?” Matt raised an eyebrow, and if ever sardonic had an expression . . . “Yet here you are.” “Sure, but . . .” Pierce shrugged. “I kept my apartment here for a reason, you know? Jase getting traded here was fortuitous. It gave me an excuse to return home, which gave me a reason to be close to Jason so we can keep repairing our relationship.” “If he’d gotten traded to . . . I don’t know . . . somewhere in the States, you wouldn’t have gone with him?” Pierce blew out a breath. “I might’ve gone with him for the first week or so, just to make sure he was settling in okay. Whether or not I would’ve moved there with him . . .” He rubbed his jaw, the overnight stubble he hadn’t bothered to shave scratching at his palm. “I honestly don’t know. I don’t spend much time mapping out what I would or wouldn’t have done in a situation that doesn’t exist.” “But it could exist.” Pierce stopped right there on the path, a frown pulling at his forehead. Once Matt had turned around, he said, “Are you trying to tell me something? Is Jason about to get traded? He just got here.” Matt’s eyes were dark as sin under the autumn sun. “No. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m just . . . curious.” Curious because . . . he didn’t want Pierce to leave again? Because . . . he was still in love with him? Pierce nearly laughed out loud at the fanciful thoughts. “Curious about . . . ?” Matt walked backwards, forcing Pierce to follow. “What your long-term plans are. I don’t even know what you do for work right now.” “I’m a runner.” Another sardonic eyebrow paired with an amused twist of the lips. “I beg to differ.” “No,” Pierce said with a laugh. “Not a runner runner. A runner for an antiques dealer in Quebec.” “Which is . . . ?” “I buy antiques for my dealer. She tells me what she’s looking for and what her budget is, and I run around looking for it.” “Huh.” About the Author Amy’s lived with her head in the clouds since she first picked up a book as a child, and being fluent in two languages means she’s read a lot of books! This week's throwback comes from Whiskey and Moonshine. “We’re going to be late,” Colt said from the outer room. Mal stood in front of the mirror, tying his tie. “No one is ever on time to these things. At least that’s what Audrey tells me.” He wandered from his bedroom to the sitting room. “Stop pacing. You’ll ruin the carpeting.” An expression of absolute horror crossed Colt’s face. He froze in place and stared down at his feet. “I was joking,” Mal drawled. Colt turned and glared. “That was mean.” “But fun.” “There’s something I need to say and ask.” Colt sounded suddenly shy and uncertain. “Shoot,” Mal said. He turned around, leaned back against the credenza, and waited patiently for Colt to say what was on his mind. “Are you sure you want someone like me representing your company? My parents don’t make an honest living, at least not when I knew them. I never finished high school, and—” “Colt, stop right there. You’re putting a much-needed face to my company and adding that personal touch. You’ll do a fantastic job and are the perfect combination of hip and stylish. Don’t forget, the American whiskey industry was built by hardworking, enterprising young men who built something from nothing. These people will love you! As for your parents? You’re not them. I don’t care what they did. No, I take that back. I care very much that they tossed you out into the cold. Beyond that, how they live their lives is something I’ll never judge you by.” “Thank you,” Colt whispered. “I’ll admit I was a bit worried.” Mal sighed. “Don’t be. Ever.” It angered Mal to think someone had treated Colt as they had, especially his own family. Each passing day together, Mal was coming to know and like Colt more and more. With Colt, what you saw was what you got. He was forthright, honest, and simply pleasant to be around. Mal wanted to make up for the harshness of Colt’s life before he landed at Mal’s distillery. At the sound of a knock, Colt strode to the door. Mal held out one hand, trying to stop him. “No, you probably don’t—” He dropped his chin and muttered, “He’ll learn.” Colt glanced back for a few seconds as he opened the door, and Gwen burst through in a swish of satin. Colt stepped to the side and gasped. “Gwendolyn… you’re gorgeous!” Gwen stopped in her tracks, her face splitting into a delighted smile. “Thank you.” She twirled around. “What do you think?” “Perfect,” Colt said. “He does not lie,” Mal added. Gwen took hold of Colt’s shoulders and asked very seriously, “What socks are you wearing?” “Who cares?” Colt spread his arms wide. She giggled. “No one. You are a sight in that suit.” Mal turned to Colt and didn’t try to hide how he looked Colt up and down. “He is indeed a sight. A very nice sight.” Colt look down at himself. “I really look okay?” “Yes,” Gwen said at the same time as Mal. Colt rolled his shoulders, looking happy and much more confident. “Is this one seven grand?” Colt asked. “Oh no,” Mal and Gwen said together. Gwen turned to Mal and gave him one of her appraising looks. “Not bad for the whiskey heir who insists on dressing himself.” Whiskey and Moonshine is available in eBook, paperback and

He’d go in the morning to retrieve Janelle, and the day after that, she’d be on her own while he was at work. As he got out of the shower, toweling his hair off and thinking it needed a trim, he was nearly knocked on his ass by three dogs scampering through the house. “Hey, don’t chase the—” Val stopped short. Janelle’s cat was sprawled on the couch, flipping his tail side to side. His dogs were standing at the front door, staring up at it with ears cocked, tails wagging. That’s when he realized there was someone on the other side, knocking. In a hurry, Val dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, then pulled aside a curtain that hung on the window in the door. A man standing outside gave him a nod and lifted one hand in a greeting. He looked like a salesman. He was probably around fifty and about the same height as Val, with a solid build, short salt-and-pepper hair, and piercing black eyes. He looked like the sort of man it was unwise to cross. “There’s no soliciting. How the hell did you get back here anyway?” Val opened the door but left the screen door shut and locked. The man took a deep breath and suddenly looked uncomfortable. Val resisted the urge to glance sideways at the baseball bat he kept against the wall near the door. “I’m not selling anything,” the man said. “Can I come in, please?” “No.” Val started to shut the door. The man put one hand on the frame of the screen door. “I’m Janelle’s father. They told me at the main office up front to come back here. Someone tried to call but got your voice mail.” Val held up one finger, turned, and retrieved his phone. There was a call from the farm’s main number, no message left. “I was in the shower,” he said. “Wyatt Harig. Is Janelle here?” “You’re pretty tall,” Val blurted out and felt his face heat up. Wyatt glanced down and grinned at the same time. He was nice looking when he smiled. Obviously he’d heard that more than once. “Janelle is adopted. And yes, she knows.” He put his hands in his pants pockets and sighed. “Do we have to do this through the door?” “I… uh… don’t really….” “I’m an investigator, and I work in antiquities. I’m not a mob hit man.” “You do sort of look like one,” Val said. Run for the Roses is available in eBook, paperback and through

Buy Links JMS Books | Amazon US | Amazon UK One knock could change their lives forever… Blurb Knox Townsend can hardly believe it when he walks into Playgroundz Café Store #57 to find his old high school crush, Trevor Channing, working the cash register. Once upon a time, the two had shared a smoldering, passionate, once in a lifetime kiss while their prom dates were passed out and… never spoke of it again. Suddenly, Knox is Trevor’s boss and back in tiny Seaside, Florida for the next week to convert his cold brew coffee machines to the upgraded model. But suddenly, the only thing Knox really wants to upgrade are his feelings for Trevor, long simmering but suddenly reignited. This time, Knox hopes, for good! Trevor hasn’t seen Knox in four years, ever since he left town right after graduation without so much as a backward glance, let alone anything as civil as a goodbye. Suddenly he is Trevor’s boss, in town for a whole week to oversee his franchise café’s equipment upgrades and staying at the same hotel where they’d shared their first, and only, kiss: the Seaside Inn. What Knox doesn’t know is that one of the front desk clerks is his regular customer at Playgroundz Café’ and, for a few free gift cards and extra soy whip on his daily latte, Trevor has just checked into the room next door to Knox’s. The room with the adjoining doors he plans to keep unlocked all week, just in case! Excerpt Knox slid close, if only to breathe in Trevor’s vaguely innocent scent and feel the heat wafting from his lean, tempting body. “You know what I have in mind, tease.” “Listen, let’s not rush things,” Trevor chuckled wryly, enjoying his time in the cat bird seat. “I mean, you’re here all week, right?” They stood halfway between the sushi bar and the hotel lobby, Trevor’s Jeep—at least, Knox assumed it was his Jeep, owing to the half dozen Playgroundz Café stickers littering the bumper—the only car left in the otherwise empty parking lot. “Fine, sure, if you’re playing hard to get or whatever, I get it, but you’ve still had, like, three carafes of sake, so…why not stay the night and drive in tomorrow when you’re good and sober, you know?” “Hmmm, tempting,” Trevor teased, digging his hands in the front pockets of his faded salmon cargo shorts while gently drifting from foot to foot in the empty parking lot. “Even if I’ve only had two carafes and I could probably, maybe, kinda drive tonight.” “Why risk it, old pal?” Knox murmured, clutching a handful of Trevor’s casual sea foam T-shirt in his grip and tugging him toward the stairwell that led to his room on the second floor. “Besides, second chances, right?” Trevor rolled his eyes even as he followed dutifully. “Good thing the old Seaside Inn still has two queen size beds in every room,” he muttered, still playing coy even as Knox found it harder and harder to walk with every step toward the possibility of another dreamy kiss with his first, and most powerful, boy crush. “Jesus, Trev, when did you become such a prude?” “Hmmmmm, not sure,” Trevor mused as he drifted up the steps a pace or two in front of Knox. “Maybe the day you left town without a second glance, let alone another word. Probably then, Knox, is when I became such a prude.” Trevor stood on the second-floor landing, turning slightly to make room for Knox. They stood, face to face, nearly the same height, and Trevor’s full lips, glossy and thick, aglow beneath the dim light just above. “This feels weird, right?” Knox snorted, dragging the old school hotel room keychain from his pocket, the key dangling from the vaguely Christmas tree shaped plastic that still had the room number printed under the faded Seaside Inn logo: 224. “Which part?” He drifted down the hallway toward his room, the air warm and soft on their skin as Knox slowly followed. “Me showing up in your café this morning? Me being your boss? Me being in town? Me drinking too much sake? Or, oh yeah, me staying in the same hotel where we first, you know…” They were at his door now. Knox’s heart was pounding, his palms sweaty and hands trembling as he struggled to slither the key into the lock. It finally stumbled in, but they didn’t, the door only partly open as Knox felt Trevor still had more to say before finally coming inside. “Kissed?” Trevor finished for him. “You can say it, you know? It happened, right? It wasn’t just a dream of mine?” Knox nodded, voice soft and low to match his confessional gaze. “It happened, Trevor. I wanted it to happen. Wanted it to happen since that first time I saw you in homeroom.” He drifted closer, so close, on the empty walkway. Trevor was leaning back against the wrought iron railing across from the half-open door, as if waiting for something. Knox wasn’t sure what. Maybe even Trevor wasn’t sure what. Both of them, it seemed, were grasping at straws, cocky in ways neither of them truly felt, and shy in others. It felt like starting over, and Knox was as nervous as he’d ever been. “Phew, okay, because…we never talked about it, you know?” “I’m tired of talking about it,” Knox grunted, inching closer as he put a hand on either side of Trevor’s along the weathered upstairs railing. Trevor swallowed. Hard. And loud. Loud enough for Knox to hear. “Me too,” he squeaked, involuntarily licking his lips. “So, what are we gonna do about it?” Knox leaned gently in, winked and gave Trevor a soft, smooth, aborted kiss. With another wink he stepped back and reached for the doorknob. “Come inside, Trev, and find out.” About the Author Alex Winters is the pseudonym of a busy restaurant manager whose curious young staff would love nothing more than to follow him around the dining room reading his steamiest, most romantic passages aloud! Declan tripped and would have hit the pavement if it weren’t for Lucas diving in front of him and stopping his fall. “What the hell?” Declan grabbed a fistful of Lucas’s fur to steady himself. As Lucas stood, he pushed Declan upright. As soon as Declan let go of Lucas, his lover’s form returned to human. “Are you alright?” “I…yes…I.” Harsh panting made Declan look down at Moose. The dog was bright-eyed and his tail was wagging, but his tongue hung out the side of his mouth and he was puffing huge breaths. “We should go back,” Declan said softly. “You should change back, you’re naked.” Lucas grinned and looked down at himself. “I am! I guess having the city M.E. being cited for indecent exposure would look bad on my resume.” In the next instant Lucas was a huge wolf again and trotting at Declan’s side as he and Moose walked toward home. Their route home gave them a lovely view of the city skyline. Lights from downtown Boggslake twinkled cheerfully and lifted Declan’s spirits. He really did love this town. “Did you know it was your head detective, Stewie Belle who coined the nickname The Sleepless City?” Declan asked. Two sets of canid ears twitched in his direction. “He, Stewie, was from New York City, though I guess you can tell that by his accent. Anyway, he always said New York might be the city that never sleeps, but Boggslake was a sleepless city.” He reached down and patted Moose’s shoulder. “I always liked that nickname.” Find more diverse snippets from a number of authors in the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. Falling in love with his ghostwriter wasn’t part of the script. Blurb Dylan: I’ve lived my adult life under the Hollywood spotlight, but no one really sees who I am. I’ve gone down the dark path of drinking my anxiety away, along with my career, but now I’m searching for the light again. My struggle to stay sober has me releasing long held secrets. A contract to publish my autobiography means laying everything in the open. When I meet Max, my ghostwriter, I’m not sure how our collaboration is going to work. He’s a university professor from New York with more degrees than I can count and I’m a guy from West Texas that barely finished college. And he may be my ghostwriter, but Max is anything but invisible. Intimate confessions lead to heightened emotions and an unexpected love that fills up all my empty places. I don’t know what the future holds, but I want Max to be a part of it. I’m done hiding in plain sight. It’s time for this star to finally shine. Max: I’m an established university professor and a celebrity ghostwriter. Why ghostwriting? Because it pays. And I need the money. My ex-husband likes to threaten me with legal battles over custody of our daughter and while he has family reserves, I don’t. So I take a summer ghostwriting contract, a celebrity tell-all. I expect to meet another self-absorbed actor, but Dylan Aylmer doesn’t fit any pre-conceived mold. His eyes are so haunted that I can’t look away and now I’m curious to unlock all his secrets. What I find is not only a man trying to mend his broken soul but a beautiful person that is so much more than outward appearances. I swore I’d never be vulnerable to heartache again, but Dylan has me breaking all my steadfast rules. Am I chasing a shooting star, soon to be gone, or is our love the kind that shines forever? Excerpt “My part in this book deal is supposed to be kept confidential. There’s a reason it’s called ghostwriting. I hope to hell that reporter didn’t get my photo.” The worst-case scenarios ran through my mind, but I forced myself to remain calm. We arrived at the gate and after we provided our ID, we were escorted to a private waiting area. At least in this section, there were two security staff on standby. Neither of us were in the mood for small talk and sat quietly until Warren entered the room a few minutes later. “I had security escort that guy out of the airport. It’s all under control.” “Are you sure about that? Did he get any photos?” I asked, concerned that my anonymity was no more. “He didn’t, Max. And we’ve done our best to ensure your name is kept out of the press. That’s part of the reason why you’re working on a yacht in the middle of the Mediterranean instead of downtown New York. But Dylan is still a celebrity, and he gets attention, and yes there is always the possibility of news leaking. You’ve done this kind of work before, so why the concern now?” “Usually everything is done virtually.” “The in-person request was my idea,” Dylan replied. “Mainly because of the timing with my film and for other privacy reasons.” “I agreed to the contract. It’s just that I have a thirteen-year-old daughter.” I ran an agitated hand through my hair. “You see where I’m going with this.” “I do, but again, there’s no reason to be worried,” Warren replied. “It was one reporter and he got nothing.” “If my ex-husband sees my name or my daughter’s in the tabloid news, he’ll flip out.” “Husband?” Dylan asked with a raised brow. “Ex. Is there a problem?” I said, turning in my seat to face him. Dylan better not have any issue with my sexuality, or I would walk out of the airport right now, contract be damned. “Nope,” he shook his head and smirked at me. “Just nosy.” I let out a surprised laugh, despite my growing anxiety. “An honest answer from someone in show biz.” I placed my hand on my chest. “I’m honored.” Dylan’s smirk faded as quick as it came, and I could sense the shift in his mood. “I can tell that you really don’t want to do this, and I won’t blame you if you want to back out. You have priorities you need to consider.” The look of resignation on Dylan’s face touched something in me. That was highly unusual. My ex often accused me of being unfeeling because I didn’t let my emotions get involved in certain decisions, and maybe he was right. I tended to be more rational and analytical. So why this man, a stranger, should spark my empathy was beyond my comprehension. “I’m going to hit the head before we board. Thanks for seeing us off, Warren.” Dylan shook his hand and walked away, leaving a vacuum of sorts. Like he’d taken all the oxygen along with him. Warren motioned to the exit. “Time for me to get going. And stop worrying, Max. Focus on the book. That’s the priority.” He paused and shook his head. “Look, I won’t bullshit you. There’ve been many times when I wanted to kick Dylan’s reckless butt to the curb. But he’s worked hard for a fresh start. He’s got a new movie role. And the book. I want to ensure both succeed, and Dylan along with it.” “I’ll do my best,” I responded as Warren nodded and walked away. Part of me wished I’d never have to work with Dylan, but the bigger part of me called me a liar. I didn’t even know the man and yet I was intensely curious about him, and that right there made the writer in me stand at attention. There was more to Dylan Aylmer than a model pretty face and a salacious past. It was those sad, hypnotic eyes. He’d cast a strange kind of spell on me, and I was determined to find out why.
