There was a second, even louder crack and the handle broke free and moved, releasing the final clamp. An immediate, eerie stillness and silence hung in the air around them. For what seemed forever no one moved. Declan barely heard them breathing and the racket of so many hearts pounding furiously, including his own, flooded his senses.
