They made it a little over two weeks. They’d kept busy, cleaning up trails, trimming brush, and repainting things. After the first week or so, Luis suspected the alpha was digging up things for them to do, but he wasn’t going to complain. They’d earned quite a bit of money, so when they were asked to move on, they could keep going for a while. So far they hadn’t even had to sell Miguel’s mamá’s ring. It stayed in an inside pocket of one of the backpacks, hidden, their unspoken last resort. Luis had known it wouldn’t last. Mike and Beth were very nice, as was the pack beta, a Native man named John Chavis, who ran the local horseback riding stables. He’d taught them how to saddle and unsaddle the horses, how to brush them down. When they ran out of things to paint and clean at the lodge, they’d cleaned out stalls and fed the horses, helping around the stables. John had even paid them for it, and they’d put that money away with the rest of their earnings. Despite how nice everyone was, Luis had known something would happen. They were on borrowed time. Something would give them away. It ended up being the last thing they expected. After dinner some eighteen days after they got to Silver City, Mike called them into the kitchen at the lodge. Beth was putting away the last of the dishes as they sat around the small table in the corner with iced tea. “Do you remember when we agreed to let you stay?” Luis swallowed, his heart pounding. Here it is. Both he and Miguel nodded. “Well, I said there was one caveat to you two staying here, and that was that you didn’t bring trouble with you. But I just got an e-mail that’s worrisome. Now, if you can tell me you’re not the two people it’s talking about, then that’s fine.” He pushed a piece of paper across the table. Luis looked down, and his former alpha’s name stared back at him in big, bold letters. He couldn’t even bring himself to read the entire e-mail. He saw something about mates, descriptions of the two of them, their first names—which of course they’d given to the alpha—along with language that included something about harboring them and causing trouble to anyone who did. He looked up and met Miguel’s eyes, unable to stop the disappointment and fear from filling him. He knew what Miguel was thinking. After being friends most of their lives before becoming mates, he knew how Miguel thought. They couldn’t lie, even if they wanted to. And they’d already lied enough by leaving out the fact that they were mates. But saying it wasn’t them wasn’t something Miguel could do. And Luis, while he might have been better able to than Miguel, really didn’t want to. He swallowed the fear but let Miguel do the talking for them. “It is us. I’m sorry, I had no idea our former alpha was looking for us. I… we….” He closed his mouth and shrugged helplessly. Beth came over to the table and picked up the paper, reading it. “Look, if it was just about being mates… well, we’d have to ask you to keep it private. Our guests—and the small town down the hill—wouldn’t want to see it. But we might be able to accept that. This, though….” Mike sighed. “When you came here, we told you we’re a small pack. If your former alpha wants to make trouble for us, it could be all over before we could even alert the prime.” Mike frowned. “I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” Luis’s heart sank, even though he knew it had been coming. He nodded. “Can we stay the night?” Miguel asked. Mike nodded. “Yeah. John’ll give you a ride into town early in the morning. There’s a bus at 7:00 a.m. to Deming. The next closest pack is Santa Fe. You can talk to them, but I don’t know that Nate’ll be any more able to take you than I am. You understand, we just can’t take the chance.” Miguel swallowed, then nodded. “We understand, alpha.” “All right, then. I suggest you pack and get ready.”

In the next instant Maddie placed a caressing hand to her face, leaned in, and kissed her. Although she had been anticipating this very possibility for hours, it came on her as swift and unforeseen as a summer storm. The sensual heat of those urgent lips melded to hers ignited something deep within Florentina’s core that sprung to life for the very first time and exploded throughout her being, a sensation so phenomenal, so novel that she had no context in which to place it. Breathless, her mind went totally blank, and she simply savored the moment. Madelena considered. “Take one step at a time. May I suggest we try to get some sleep and take a night to process it all? I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment.” “You’re overwhelmed?” Fiore laughed. “I’m not certain my legs will carry me upstairs!” Maddie hesitated to move, as the tug of an invisible cord was drawing her back to her newfound treasure. Neither was Florentina was moving away. One more kiss and you must move. Give both of us time to think. She touched her lips to Fiore’s and closed her eyes. What makes one kiss a sloppy flop and another a driving, sensuous pleasure? Is it one’s mental perception or a physical current that connects two individuals who are similarly charged? I can feel the energy pass between her and I unlike any other before. “I shall see you in the morning.” She released Florentina and pushed herself to her feet with a sheer force of will. Florentina followed saying her good-nights and Madelena closed the bedroom door behind her as she left. Alone once more, she glanced around her empty chamber and wished her lover could have stayed all night. Author Bio
