As an adult, he eventually made his way to university and earned a degree in Art History with a strong focus on Anthropology. Primarily a portrait painter and graphic artist, Bey sat down one day and decided to write about the two things that he felt most passionate about: sex and the sea. Bey currently lives in the wilds of Montréal with his best buddy, a spotty pit bull named Murphy. Caged: Love and Treachery on the High Seas is his first novel. - Varian Krylov Since her girlhood in a sunny coastal town in California, Varian Krylov has nurtured a love of words and a curiosity about the deep, dark forces at work in human nature, especially sexuality, and how they often paradoxically twine with our tenderest impulses. Her stories tend to explore the sometimes fine line between what arouses, and what frightens, what we’re driven to, and what we’re ashamed of. As witty and seductive as I am sarcastic and self-deprecating, I spend as much time as possible thinking and writing about sex. No, not dense, inscrutable post-feminist texts on media representations of gender and the body--that was grad school. I write stories--short stories, novels, and starting a few weeks ago, screenplays--most of which poke and prod and the dark little corners of human sexuality. In a sense, nothing's taboo, anymore. There's no act, no fetish that hasn't been made utterly banal in the proliferation of porn. What intrigues and excites me is the exploration of the conflicting impulses, the twisted psychology and turbulent emotions of people who find themselves unable to resist desires that lie beyond their own moral boundaries. - Mathew Ortiz Mathew Ortiz was born in Nuremberg Germany in 197O, the son of a Army man and his Hungarian wife. Spending only two years in Germany, his family relocated to Fort Smith, Arkansas. Here is where he attended primary school and college, obtaining a degree in Nursing. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona meeting his partner Tim there. Matt and Tim relocated to Orlando, Florida in the early 2000s. Mathew had been published in a collective arts magazine in college. Coupled with his love of reading, he wrote his first novella in early 2012. He continues to write, honing his 'voice' and enjoying the responses, both postive and negative, to his work. - Joseph Lance Tonlet Joseph is a born and raised Southern Californian--with a twenty-year stint of living in the Midwest. He loves the laid-back lifestyle of San Diego and considers himself lucky to live where people dream of vacationing. A lifelong reader of m/m fiction, he began his writing career one night sitting at his MacBook and has never looked back. Excerpt: Before I had a chance to shut the front door, the sound of Brady choking on his own vomit pierced my eardrums. I was in our bedroom within seconds to witness him take what ended up being his last breath. Immediately I rolled him to his side to help him clear his airway. He flopped onto his back. Abdominal thrusts. I slapped his face and shouted his name. 9-1-1. I followed the directions the dispatcher gave me on speakerphone, putting my effort into every motion as tears ran down my face. “The paramedics are on their way. Do you hear the sirens yet?” “Yes,” I said as I used my full weight to come down on Brady’s torso, trying to dislodge whatever particle had stopped all air from moving in and out of his lungs. Nothing helped. He just stared up at me with glazed-over eyes and refused to breathe. “Goddammit. Don’t you dare leave me like this!” I blankly watched as the paramedics swarmed into the bedroom, shooing me away so they could assess Brady’s condition, and I saw the grim looks on their faces when they realized what had really happened. The frenzied activity ceased, and their demeanor changed the second they found the syringe, spoon, and lighter. On Sale Now At Posy was kind enough to answer a few questions for me. When did you first consider yourself a writer? Probably about a year ago. I was in the middle of working on edits for two novels and a short story while also trying to promote Fusion and Spark. I still worked part time teaching, but nearly every other moment that wasn’t devoted to my family was spent in my office working on some aspect of a story. That was also the same time I realized I would never again try to release four novels and a novella in four months. What inspired you to write your first book? I’m about to show my dork, so be prepared. ;) I love karaoke. Every weekend for a few years, my best friend and I would head out to sing. We got to be great friends with the bartender, the DJ, and many of the singers, and I loved the dorky atmosphere we created, even though some people took karaoke way too seriously. But sitting there watching people go up to sing and putting themselves out there, I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if a bartender fell for one of the singers, someone he’d previously gone to school with and thought was not only out of his league but also that he judged a little. Four minutes on stage isn’t much to judge someone, so I wondered what would happen if the bartender thought the singer had this perfect life, when in reality, it had just gone to hell. So the book was inspired by my time at karaoke, but very little of the story actually takes place in a bar, even if music is a focus of the book. Instead, I follow these two men through family drama, higher education, the rise and fall of fame, and scary symptoms that take time to understand, diagnose, and come to term with. Do you have a specific writing style? I’m not sure if it’s my style, but I love writing about families. Whether we want to be or not, we’re all affected by our family of origin, no matter how that family looks or if we have contact with them still. I tend to pull family dynamics into everything, which any good family therapist would do. ;) I also pepper my stories with snark and humor, but there’s a heck of a lot more drama and heartfail in there. There always seems to be some medical under- or over-tone to my stories as well, whether they be physical or mental health. Considering I have five chronic medical diagnoses, some I’ve had since I was a toddler, I don’t know life without medical conditions, so it comes out. So I asked for a blog topic, and you asked, “Which do you like better: Vampires or Mermen and why? How was writing a series about each similar? How was it different?” Great questions. Some are easy to answer, and others are more of a challenge. So let’s start with the tough one first. Which do I prefer, vampires or mermen? Ack! Do I really have to choose? Honestly, I don’t have a preference. Each creature has his own appeal, and each universe fascinates me. I love the angstiness of vampires and their constant struggle to maintain their humanity (or what happens when they don’t struggle in that way). I love their immortality, and the complications it presents. I love the concept of vampires creating more of their own from humans, and how those newborn vampires often can’t easily control their urge for blood. All of these concepts make writing vampires fascinating, and developing characters in that universe so much fun. Mermen, on the other hand, are newer territory. My mermen can shift in and out of human form. I created their universe wholesale, because when I wrote the first Mermen of Ea Series book, there were almost no mermen books (especially in the MM genres). That gave me a lot of leeway to do what I wanted with them, but it also make the worldbuilding in the stories more challenging, since there wasn’t much out there to build upon. People didn’t have the same sorts of expectations of mermen as they have of vampires. The Blood Series and the Mermen of Ea Series were, in many ways, very similar to write. Both required me to imagine a complete universe where these unusual creatures could exist. Both series call for characters who learn and grow through events beyond their control, and both series required complicated plots that are complete over a series of three books. The difference is what I alluded to before. When someone says “vampires,” readers have certain expectations. But if you write a new vampire story with all of the familiar elements and nothing unique, readers may get bored. Readers want familiarity, but they’re also looking for more than just the old vampires they’ve been reading. Balancing these elements made writing the Blood Series different from the Mermen of Ea Series. How does that play out? The vampires in Blood and Rain are essentially immortal because they live extraordinarily long lives. On the other hand, my vampires are not “undead.” They are very much living, breathing creatures. And they don’t have any issues with sunlight. Yes, they crave human blood and they struggle with control of their urge for blood. My vampires can mate and have children. Vampires can be born or created. Born vampires, or “ancient” vampires, are the most powerful and are a sort of vampire royalty. Some of the ancient vampires intermarried with humans, and created quasi-humans who become vampire hunters. The hunters are long-lived, but not immortal. Hunters can become immortal, however, with the help of an ancient vampire. Hunters can also become vampires in the same way a normal human would. I hope you’ll enjoy the universe in Blood and Rain! I sure enjoyed writing it. -Shira Blurb: Blood: Book One Adrien Gilbert has spent several lifetimes searching for the love he lost. Born in the 1800s into a clan of fabled vampire hunters, Adrien once wanted nothing more than to tend his family’s vineyard in southern France or read a good book. But Adrien’s peaceful existence ends abruptly when his older brother, François, is murdered. Bound by his hunter’s oath, Adrien sets out on a path that will forever change his life when he agrees to execute his brother’s killer, the vampire Charles Duvalier. After months chasing the elusive Charles, Adrien reluctantly makes a bargain with Nicolas Lambert, an ancient vampire. Adrien will escort Nicolas to Paris for his marriage to a rival clanswoman, and Nicolas will help Adrien find Charles. Nicolas’s quiet strength and gentle heart soon convince Adrien that Nicolas is nothing like the vampires he has sworn to destroy. As the wedding date draws nearer, a force intent on destroying the fragile peace between the vampire clans threatens to tear apart both the vampire realm and the world of the hunters. To secure both past and future for those he loves, Adrien must find a way to stop the looming war between hunters and vampires. But first he’ll have to let Nicolas go. Excerpt: Adrien licked the skin of Cole’s neck, feeling the blood pulse there, hearing it call to him. Cole tilted his head in anticipation, opening himself to Adrien. Adrien buried his teeth in Cole’s skin. Blood flooded his mouth and danced on his tongue, sweet and salty. Too long. His body was far more vampire-like in its craving for blood than when he’d first been given the gift of an ancient vampire’s soul. He wondered if it was the same for other immortals. Adrien tried to ignore the images that flashed through his mind—the sound of silvery laughter, a mother’s loving caress. Cole’s memories. Adrien despised this forced intimacy, but he’d come to see it as the price of blood. Something to be tolerated. It hadn’t always been that way. When he’d shared Nicolas’s blood, Adrien had experienced great joy. He’d seen himself through Nicolas’s eyes and felt the depth of Nicolas’s love. Each drop of that precious liquid had opened new doors. Each taste offered insight into Nicolas’s heart and soul. A beloved memory. A mystery—the mystery of Nicolas—unfolding with every swallow. Adrien drank his fill, then claimed Cole’s mouth. This kind of contact he could stomach. He didn’t need sex to survive, but he enjoyed the release. Cole unbuttoned Adrien’s black silk shirt and his cock swelled against Adrien’s thigh. Adrien moaned as Cole skated his fingertips over his chest. “I have never known a hunter to crave blood,” Cole whispered in his ear. “I thought only we experienced the bloodlust.” “You were wrong,” Adrien said as he pulled Cole’s shirt over his head and mouthed a pretty pink nipple. Sex was always better after he fed, and Adrien’s cock was already hard at the thought of fucking such a lovely ass. He drew Cole’s body against his, walked backward into the living room, and pulled Cole with him onto the rug. Soon they were naked and he was no longer a hunter or an immortal, he was simply a man, seeking release, seeking pleasure. For at least an hour after, Adrien lay on the floor and allowed the night air to caress his bare skin. He closed his eyes and dozed. “Adrien.” The voice awakened him. Nicolas’s voice again. Why sleep if it only served to reawaken the pain he sought to suppress? He stood and pulled on his jeans. He walked onto the balcony in his bare feet, then climbed to the roof of the penthouse. Pathetic. Having reached the edge, he spread his arms. He leaned forward and fell unimpeded, riding the wind like a sigh. The glass of the building sailed by him, the breeze buffeting his face. He hit the water and sank into the cold blackness. He wished he could die. One of the things I love about writing an historical is the research. I always learn something new, and often my discoveries shape a part of that story. Although there is a lot of information on the internet, I prefer to read a mix of hardcopy and online. I guess a part of that is because I work in a library. With On Wings of Song I watched several movies and mini-series which were set during WWI and the time either side of it. I’d already read a lot of fiction, and watched movies set during the early part of the 20th C, including both World Wars and the time between, so was familiar with it. All the same, it never hurts to watch and read more, and with the centenary of the war this year, there are a lot of new movies and books being released, which is great. One of my early discoveries when I started reading The Forgotten Voices books were that some of the men involved in the 1914 Christmas Truce exchanged uniform buttons in lieu of gifts. This was something I knew had to be a part of On Wings of Song, and the buttons Jochen and Aiden give each other become an important part of the story. Another very helpful source of information—also containing personal anecdotes—was Stanley Weintraub’s book Silent Night. But apart from reading about the truce itself, I also needed to read about other parts of the war as the truce is just the beginning of Jochen and Aiden’s story. Aiden takes part in the first Battle of the Somme in 1916, and Jochen is at Mons in 1918. I wanted to show both sides of the war, rather than just favouring one side or the other. I chose the Somme as one as I’d already read a fair bit about it for another story I’d written. My other choice was in part because of events that had happened around the Armistice in 1918. These battles shift the action forward in time from 1914, to 1916 to 1918 when the war ends. The war is just the beginning of the story. The rest of the story takes place in 1920, almost six years after Aiden and Jochen originally meet. I’m familiar with Music Hall as I’ve played for the modern equivalent, Musical Theatre, but I still had to find songs for the performance Jochen goes to. There’s more on that and the research I did on tea rooms and literature in other posts. I also needed a location for Lavender Cottage, which Jochen inherits from his Great-aunt Wilhelmina. With that I got very lucky. Crayford, in Bexley, where the cottage is, has a website. Not only do they have modern photographs, but many taken in the early 1920s, so I was able to look at photographs of the time and get a decent feel for the area at the time. I’ve used several real locations and changed others to suit the story. While it’s not always possible to be completely accurate when writing about another time period, I try to write it as authentically as I can, and hopefully do it, and those who lived then, justice. Research is a big part of writing historical fiction, and although I might be daunted by the amount involved, it still pulls me back to write more. Blurb: Six years after meeting British soldier Aiden Foster during the Christmas Truce of 1914, Jochen Weber still finds himself thinking about Aiden, their shared conversation about literature, and Aiden’s beautiful singing voice. A visit to London gives Jochen the opportunity to search for Aiden, but he’s shocked at what he finds. The uniform button Jochen gave him is the only thing Aiden has left of the past he’s lost. The war and its aftermath ripped everything away from him, including his family and his music. When Jochen reappears in his life, Aiden enjoys their growing friendship but knows he has nothing to offer. Not anymore. Excerpt: “I’ve seen it,” Aiden said quietly. “I wish to God I hadn’t.” He looked directly at Jochen. Jochen met Aiden’s gaze. He’d seen an echo of Conrad’s fire in Aiden when he’d talked about his music earlier that afternoon. “Don’t die on the wire, Aiden.” “I’ll try not to.” Aiden’s words were an empty promise. They both knew it, but what else was he going to say? The red-haired man Aiden had spoken to about arranging the burials walked over to him. He too held a shovel, and he wiped perspiration from his brow despite the cold. “There’s going to be a combined service for the dead,” he told them. “In about ten minutes in no man’s land in front of the French trenches.” As they made their way over, men were already beginning to gather, soldiers from opposite sides sitting together, conversation dwindling to a respectful silence. A British chaplain stood in front of them, a Bible in his hand, a German beside him. Jochen recognized him, although he didn’t know his name. The young man was only a few years older than Jochen and was studying for the ministry—would he ever get the chance to complete those studies? Jochen and Aiden found somewhere to sit a few rows back from the front and joined the company of men. The German spoke first. “Vater unser, der du bist im Himmel. Geheiligt werde dein Name.” The British chaplain repeated the words in English. “Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.” They then spoke a few words each, some from the Bible, the rest from their hearts. Their congregation was silent apart from a few quiet “amens.” Jochen saw a couple of men wipe tears away. He was close to it himself. Finally the chaplain bowed his head in prayer. When he’d finished, he spoke quietly to the man who had come to stand next to him. It was Captain Williams. He nodded and looked over the crowd, his gaze fixing on Aiden. Aiden must have guessed what Williams wanted. He inclined his head in response and then stood. Jochen glanced between the two men, confused. What did Williams expect Aiden to do? “Aiden?” Jochen asked softly. Aiden smiled at him and began to sing. “O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining….” He lifted his head, his voice strong and clear, each note building on the last to create something truly beautiful, something angelic. Aiden’s eyes shone; his body swayed slightly in time with the music. He was the music. His audience sat in awe. Jochen could feel the emotion rippling through the men around him, tangible, as though he could reach out and touch it. He felt something inside himself reach out, wanting to be a part of it, to be carried along the wave of pure music, to grab it and never let go. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as "too many." These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of "spare time" is really just a myth. Excerpt: Lucien inhaled deeply and then began to softly sing “Ae Fond Kiss,” a popular Tscottish ballad written twenty years prior, sliding his eyelids closed, afraid of any negative reaction from his betrothed. His mother used to sing it to him every night before leaving for a ball or party she was obligated to attend. Rosemary would sing the song and then kiss the top of his head. Annabelle would be waiting at the door, and when Rosemary finished, thinking that Lucien was asleep, she would meet Annabelle at the door, and the two of them would share a sweet kiss and then leave. Lucien loved those late-night lullabies by his mother, cherished them, and when he went to bed, even at his advanced age, he would sing the song to himself until he would fall asleep. Finishing the last note of the song, Lucien opened his eyes and looked at Heathcliff, expecting to find him asleep, only to find him looking at him in wonder. “What?” he asked. “You have a beautiful voice, Lucien,” Heathcliff told him. Lucien blushed and ducked his head. “Thank you,” he whispered. Heathcliff’s fingers under his chin brought his face back up, and he found himself looking into Heathcliff’s eyes. “Don’t do that. Don’t hide from me. Never hide from me,” Heathcliff told him. “You have a beautiful voice. One that has obviously been handcrafted by the very touch of God. The beauty of your voice is rivaled only by the beauty of your face, which does not compare to the beauty of your spirit.” Vicktor Alexander Vicktor “Vic” Alexander wrote his first story at the age of ten and hasn’t stopped writing since. He loves reading about anything and everything and is a proud member of the little known U.N. group (Undercover Nerds) because while he lives, eats, breathes, and sleeps sports, he also breathes history and science fiction and grew up a Trekkie. But don’t ask him about Dungeons & Dragons, because he has no idea how to play that game. When it comes to writing he loves everything from paranormal to contemporary to fantasy to historical and is known not only for being the Epilogue King but also for writing stories that cross lines and boundaries that he doesn’t know are there. Vic is a proud father of two daughters one of whom watches over him from Heaven with his deceased partner Christopher. Vic is a proud trans* and gay man, and when he is not writing, he is hanging out with his friends, or being distracted by videos of John Barrowman, Scott Hoying, and Shemar Moore. Vicktor has published numerous bestselling novels and has a WIP list that makes him exhausted just thinking about. This was one of the few times they could lay on top of each other without anyone commenting on it. The tight green shirt pressed against David’s lean chest, Matthew licked his lips as they squared off to attack. “You go first,” Matthew insisted. David charged at Matthew full speed, the boy attempted to grab David’s wrist but was unsuccessful. David did not want to humiliate the Matthew in front of anyone so he stopped and backed up. He laid his hand on top of Matthew’s and placed the clammy hand where it needed to be for a successful hip throw. Matthews’s shorts began to bulge out in the front, “Flip me.” “You didn’t do yours yet,” David said confused. “Flip me now, I’m getting hard,” Matthew whispered into David’s ear. David smiled and grabbed the red head’s wrist. He flipped him onto the mat and leaned down to help him up. David pulled Matthew up. While he dusted his back off he slightly brushed his hand against Matthews tight little bubble butt. “You’re not helping,” Matthew protested. A drill instructor came over to them, “What in the ever loving world are you two doing? I better see more flipping and less jawing, do you get me!” “Sir, Yes Sir!” they replied in unison. That is until they grow up and one of them leaves the rez to fulfill his dream. One of the boys misses him more than the others. A love that started as children grew with him and when Angel Quintana left New Mexico, Garcia Blacksnake had to occupy his time until the love of his life returned. Angel came back when tragedy struck, with secrets he does not want this old friends to know. Secrets about the life he lived as his dreams came true, turning to nightmares he could not run away from. Can childhood friends help save him from a sadistic man who holds Angel’s dream in his hand? Can Garcia’s love help him to trust himself and others again? Excerpt: “Cool. Let me put it on you.” He took the cross back and moved Garcia’s hair from his left ear, where his older brother, Kevin, had pierced the lobe with a sewing needle a year before. After he slipped the hook into Garcia’s hole, he stopped to admire it for a second. Garcia turned his face a little, and before Angel knew what was happening, their lips were touching. Neither moved, their breathing getting quick as they waited for the other to jump away, but neither did. Garcia smelled so good, his lips were so soft, Angel found himself moving his hands to Garcia’s long, thin face. Garcia pushed his lips harder against Angel’s and Angel felt his friend shaking. Holding his face tighter, Angel kissed him harder, moving his lips a little like he’d seen on television. When he pulled back he saw the cross catch the sunlight and he was brought from his daze for a second before he smiled. “Angel?” “What, Garcia?” “Promise you’ll never leave me behind, okay?” Angel knew he couldn’t make that promise, but he touched the earring and swore, “As long as you have this we’ll never be apart. Not really. Okay?” Garcia looked down and said, “Okay.” He sat quiet again, then said, “Angel, I won’t tell anybody, okay?” “Okay.” He started to get up and added, “But it can’t happen again. Not only are we guys, but now we’re family.” Garcia grinned and got up with him, while he was collecting his shirt and tie and getting them back on. “I thought you said we aren’t?” “Shut up, Garcia!” PurchaseMeet Rain Carrington Rain Carrington started writing when she was just a teenager in Trinidad, Colorado but didn’t start writing M/M romance until much later. Through the years many of her gay male friends told stories of heartache and the struggle to find “the one” so she told them stories, fantasies all about them and their future cowboy, fireman, biker or policeman. When she found a writing site that encouraged her to write them down she started what was an adventure like she never had before. Her first story, Cabin fever, about a young man searching for love and finding it wrapped in a member of a mafia family gained her readers who cheered for more. She knew then that she had found her place in the world. To make stories of love and kink that not only her readers but she could get lost in as well. Rain now lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado but has traveled most of the US. Her last road trip to San Francisco gave her characters still coming out…no pun intended…in her newer stories. Rain has severe scoliosis which makes it hard for her to do all the things she used to love but it did give her the time to write that she never had before. She fights for lgbt rights from her home as best she can now and keeps in close contact with her friends that fight on two good legs to point them where they should go. She is a fervent believer that one door never closes without another opening so there are no limits she can’t get past. Of all the people in the world no one has encouraged and supported her like her friends, many of them writers themselves, and her family. There is never a dull moment in her home where laughter is in the air 24/7 and everyone knows to avoid the computer screen when she sits in front of it. They never know what kind of beautiful man love they may see. Rain calls it research, they call it, “there she goes again!” Rain was kind enough to answer a few questions! Can you share something about your works in progress? I am just starting Hot Air Balloon, another stand alone in the Enchantment series. I am also starting Big Bad Mooney, fifth in the Apishipa Creek Chronicles. Hot Air balloon will continue the little tradition I have created for myself with the third book in a series being a menage. Silly but I think it’s cute. It is going to have intrigue, murder, cops and criminals, sadness and joy. Big Bad Mooney will be about a Dom who is in love for the first time in his fifty years, only he has health issues that keep him from committing. The man he loves is much younger, so it’s a May/December romance, that is a favorite of mine. Anyone can buy the rights to name a star. What would you name a star bought for you? Barbera Ann, for my late mother Do you buy a book because of the cover, the blurb, or some other reason? I have bought books for all of those, but I love when a friend directs me to one he or she knows I will love. Do you have a library card and know where it is? Yes I do on both counts. I love libraries! I could spend hours in them. Before the internet I would go there day after day to research a topic I found interesting.
