Tuesday Teaser 8/30/2022

Picture
My teaser this week is from Love and Lust
(book 4 of the Pain and Pleasure series).
Ian laughed. “How very clandestine. Is there a secret handshake? Or maybe a secret flogger slap?”

Taren looked over and arched an eyebrow. “Don’t you wish.” This time he did reach over with a hand and rubbed Ian’s tense thigh. “No secrets with us.”

Ian wound his fingers through Taren’s and squeezed. “I know,” he said softly. “So, meet them…Kevin, I’d like to meet Kevin.”

Nodding, Taren put both hands back on the wheel. “I’ll text him once we’re checked in. Should we review our rules and signals?”

“I’d appreciate that, sir.” Ian fell back into his sub-over husband role by adding sir to the end of his sentence.

“You start, boy.”
“I’m not to be touched or spoken to unless you give permission and I should tell you if I refuse permission.”

“Yes,” Taren said.

“How should I do that? My safe word, sir?”

“That seems excessive.”

“It does, sir. Would a simple yes or no be sufficient, sir? A nod or head shake.”

Taren nodded and looked over at Ian, smiling softly. “That works. Next on the list, your attire.”

Ian snorted a laugh. “Sir, please. As little as possible or something that shows as much as possible.”

“I’m down with that,” Taren said and laughed.

“I believe you said, ‘I like showing you off and that I’d wear chaps, or netting or just a cock cage or my codpiece’, sir.”

Bobby is still around, but he’s doing the hard job of recovering from his injury so doesn’t have time for much else. RV tries to open himself up to a new relationship and is happy when he meets Matteo, who works at the multiplex also.  It looks like the start of a budding romance – until it isn’t.  And then there is RV’s family, loving but traditional, not ready or willing to discuss issues of sexuality. Luckily, as always, there is Mr. Aniso, RV’s freshmen-year teacher, who has become a friend and is always there to talk over anything that might be bothering RV. But he’s away for the summer, helping his partner’s family, so there’s only so much time and attention he can give RV.

A fallen angel with a broken heart. The third horseman who rejected him. A love that can destroy them both.

Blurb

Punished for choosing love over faith, the Archangel of Kindness emerged from a century of confinement enshrined in darkness, a shell of his former self. Rejected by the very Being for whom he sold his soul, the last threads of his sanity were stripped away. He is now Lucifer, the King of Hell.

Famine’s choices have only ever caused suffering for those he loves. He struggles with guilt, blaming himself for what Lucifer has become. He’s certain keeping his distance is the only way he can ensure Lucifer falls no further.

But together or apart, on the same side or not, it doesn’t matter. They are forever bound, forced to endure a never-ending loop of anguish. Betrayed and surrounded by new threats, they find themselves relying on each other while battling their own demons. But soon a choice must be made: allow their love to destroy them both or embrace it before the world ends.

Famine is the third book in the Four Horsemen series. This book is not a standalone and must be read in order.

Content Warnings: Religious themes, extreme violence, gore, and others.

Arachnophobia warning: There is also a dog-sized pet spider named Paul who just wants to be loved.

This is a paranormal, second chance, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers, MM romance filled with snark and morally questionable characters. It ends with a HFN and a mild plot cliffhanger.

Excerpt

Famine moved closer to Lucifer as though being drawn into his orbit. Lucifer wondered if it was a conscious movement or if it was instinct. It was instinct for him. Every fiber of him always wanted to be closer to Famine. He hoped—even knowing how moronic it was to hope after every hand he’d been dealt—that Famine felt the same. Lucifer needed him to. Needed him to want Lucifer with the same raw need that Lucifer wanted him. It had to be mutual. This much longing and anguish and palpable loss was too much for him to shoulder alone.

He savored any chance just to be in Famine’s presence—had summoned the Horsemen for no other purpose than just to see him again. The carnage of it was delectable, of course, but it was a pleasant bonus, not the aim. The mere minutes Lucifer spent with Famine between years apart was agony, but every waking moment was spent only in anticipation of them. Being this close to Famine and not touching was the worst torture he had ever endured.

He couldn’t be alone in this. He couldn’t.

“These are only the start of the creatures that God has under his command,” Famine continued. “If he’s choosing to let these loose, there’s no telling what’s next.”

“No,” Lucifer said. They all turned to look at him, and he gave them a secretive closed-mouth smile. He did enjoy being the center of attention. And making them wait.

He closed the remaining distance between himself and Famine, pressing the tips of his fingers against Famine’s cheek. Famine’s light-blue eyes darkened, and the sight of them heated Lucifer’s blood and made lust curl in the depths of his stomach. He had never touched another after Famine, even after all this time. And he was starved for the kind of touch that only Famine could gift him. That Famine had been keeping from him.

“Sometimes,” he murmured, for Famine’s ears only, “I want to peel the skin from your bones, make you hurt and bleed the way you make me.”

The heat in Famine’s eyes didn’t diminish from the words. If anything, they darkened further, the pulse in his throat visible and tempting Lucifer to bite down, to taste.

“It is never my intention to make you hurt.”

“You think intent matters?” Lucifer gripped Famine’s upper arm and tugged him closer until their breath mingled. “When I lie broken and bruised and aching for you, do you think I care about intent?” They would continue to hurt each other for eternity regardless of intent.

“Get your fucking hands off him,” War snarled.

Lucifer didn’t move, his eyes flicking to where War was pointing his sword at them. As though Lucifer was afraid of him. Lucifer feared no one. No one but Famine, who had the power to destroy him. Who already had, too many times to count.

Famine lifted a hand to placate his brother. “It’s fine.”

Uriel rolled his eyes and turned from them, surveying the area. “Tell us what you meant, Lucifer, or be on your way to do whatever it is you do when you have no purpose.”

Lucifer stroked Famine’s cheek and then moved up to lightly grasp the curls of his brown hair. He urged Famine forward and Famine followed, bending to him and resting his forehead on Lucifer’s shoulder. Lucifer’s insides wobbled, pleasure and joy singing in his veins at the instant, easy acceptance of his touch.

Lucifer breathed in deeply, his nose pressed against Famine’s hair. It smelled like blueberries, freshly mowed grass, and a hint of lemon.

“We kissed,” Colt confessed. “After that party. It was a sort of celebration thing. I was stoked over The Tonight Show, and we were dancing in our suite.”

Phillipe dropped his voice and leaned in closer. “How was it?”

“I don’t kiss and—” Colt stopped and chuckled when Phillipe playfully slapped his knee. “It was great. I was surprised, and we haven’t talked about it….” He met Phillipe’s gaze. “I’ve never dated before.”

“I think you’re going to have to make the next move. Technically Mr. K laid one on an employee.” Phillipe stood and picked up his scissors. “I have to finish your hair.”

“Hair, not ear.”

“We need a plan.” Phillipe fell silent while he finished Colt’s haircut. As he swept up hair from the tarp, Colt shook out his cape and folded it. Phillipe stored his tools away, then turned to Colt. “You have to tell him it’s okay, that he didn’t overstep any bounds. But be subtle.”

“Didn’t overstep, be subtle. Got it.” Colt held up his thumbs.

Blurb

Leonas is a cranky panther shifter set in his ways. He handles security for an exclusive brothel and takes the safety of the staff at The Twig and Berries seriously, to the extent of sacrificing his love life for work.

When a young vampire called Jeno shows up with heart eyes and disturbing news, Leonas is taken aback. Who is this curious youth and why is he hitting on Leonas of all people? More importantly, when is he leaving? Because Leonas has no time for romance.

Though Jeno is running from a dark past, he can’t help but to stop in his tracks for Leonas. The grumpy cat shifter might be prickly on the outside, but inside? Well, Leonas is prickly there too. He needs someone like Jeno to escape the lonely trap of his own making.

Can Jeno evade the snare of Hungary’s notorious opium slingers? Will Leonas break the chains of his past? Together, they stand a chance, but suffering alone is all they’ve ever known.

Excerpt

He takes the stairs two at a time in a bounding, clumsy sort of fashion unlike most vampires I’ve encountered. A wide grin stretches across his youthful face, but you never know with a vampire. He could be older than me, though for some reason I doubt it. He doesn’t just look young, he acts it too, flopping into the small room, into my space without so much as a by your leave, and dropping his pack on the little table next to me. The urge to bat it right off again strikes, but I resist.

“Wow. You must be Leonas. You’re even scarier looking than Ivaz warned. But he also said not to worry. That you would act mean but that you weren’t really mean. ‘Just a kitten,’ he said. That true? I’ve never met a panther before.”

Irritation crawls beneath my skin and settles at the back of my neck and the tip of my tongue. I’ll have a few words for Ivaz when next I see him. “And you are?”

“Jeno!” He says his name like it’s a prize rather than a basic introduction and thrusts his hand toward my center, dopey grin still intact.

I stare at it through lowered lids. No. Will not be touching him. He’s already acting too familiar for my comfort. I don’t plan to encourage it. “What’s your business here?”

His brows crumple as he withdraws his hand. “Letters.” He regains a modicum of his former exuberance. “I’m the new messenger.”

Since when do the vampires allow messengers to be this young? I study him. His tanned skin still retains human pores. His mouth, a rosy shade of pink with slight protrusions where fangs lay hidden beneath, trembles as if he’s finally realizing he stands before a true threat and not the harmless kitten Ivaz so erroneously made me out to be.

My own lips part as I take in his wide eyes, hazel jewels sparkling with questions, staring at mine as if it’s I who hold the answers. They spell me with their beauty. A rush of warmth fills my chest.

I shake myself out of it with an irritated huff. “And so? Hand over the letters, then.”

He squints. It’s cute. I hate him.

Ori nodded and opened his mouth, but before he could say anything Blair spoke up. He stood and leaned over the table, pointing at the monitor. “Look at the time stamp in the lower right corner. This was recorded almost two days before the first security feed we saw.”
A door swung open and one of the women wearing a mask moved forward. She stopped, leaned up on her toes, pulled down the mask and kissed the air.

“That’s two vampires for sure,” Ori pointed out.

“Look at her hair, she’s got curly black hair. I think that’s the same woman who was…” Blair faltered for a second. “Eaten by a vampire in the first bit of footage.”

“I wonder if it was the same vampire,” Forge said, his voice just above a whisper.

No one seemed alarmed or hurried until one of the Mayo stands crashed to the floor. Part of the exam table was blocked from the camera’s view by a man standing beside it. He jumped and spun to one side. There was no sound, but it was clear what happened next caused sheer pandemonium. The woman with the curly black hair was hustled out of the room by someone unseen, leaving the doors swinging a few times in their wake.

The other two people in the room scrambled away from the metal tables. One who appeared to be a man under his surgical garb grabbed up a scalpel from the tray that remained standing.

Mason jogged to Riece and looked up as well. “That’ll work.” He jumped up and grabbed one of the smaller offshoots of a larger branch and gave it a yank.

As soon as Mason had the branch within his reach, Riece took hold and helped Mason. The branch bent, and together they pulled it almost to the ground.

“Wait,” Riece said and managed to move his hands farther up the branch. He bent his knees and lifted his feet off the ground. “Now try.”

Mason threw his weight back, and Riece saw the muscles of his arms tense and bulge as he jerked downward. For a second they and the branch seemed suspended in time. The only warning Riece had was a loud crack. The branch let go, and he and Mason crashed to the ground.

As he rolled to his feet, Mason grabbed Riece’s arm and pulled him up as well. “Keep low and go check to see if anyone is coming up the gully who might have heard that,” Mason said.

Riece ran as quietly as possible to the gully edge and knelt down. He leaned forward and looked left, then right, before he scuttled back to Mason. “Nothing.”

“Okay, good,” Mason said. He took the branch and wiped it over the ground, shoving dirt, stones, and leaves around. “That’ll have to do.” He tossed the branch as far away as possible. “Let’s get going. Since there was no reason to hide our trail on our way here, we’ll have to take another route back to base camp. Try not to bend any plants or break branches.”

About the Series

A little blue world, the third planet from the sun. It's home to 7 billion people with all manner of faiths, beliefs and customs, divided by bigotry and misunderstanding, who will soon be told they are not alone in the universe. Anyone watching from the outside would pass by this fractured and tumultuous world, unless they had no other choice.

Todd Landon is one of these people, living and working in a section of the world called the United States of America. His life is similar to those around him: home, family, work, friends, and a husband.

Mirtoff Esmi is the first of her clan to be the Leader of the Nentraee. Her sole focus is to find them a home before their fleet of ships can no longer carry the last survivors of their dead world. With her brother, niece, and Faa (her companion animal) supporting her, she carries the weight of her world on her shoulders.

Mi’ko Soemu remembers the Nentraee home world for both its failures and its triumphs, which is why he holds the position of Vice-Speaker, and supports the efforts of the Nentraee Leader. He is a father and husband first, and will do what he needs to ensure his family and his fellow nentraee are safe and make it to a new world.

These three beings hold the weight of two civilizations in their hands. Will they be able to bridge the gap for both the Humans and Nentraee, amongst mistrust, terrorist attacks and personal loss? Will this be the start of a new age for both species or will bigotry and miscommunication bring these two people to their knees and final end?

Doctor Lupu leaned forward, his eyes meeting each of those assembled. “Martha’s death at the hands of those alien devils had been a tragic loss. But we must remember she never wavered from her goal of stopping the Nentraee and gaining their technology to usher in a new age for humankind.” He grumbled with a heavy Moldovan accent. He wasn’t happy with how his jowls wobbled as he spoke; with the help of his wife he had been losing weight, but the kilos didn’t seem to come off as quickly as they went on. The weight and his jowls reminded him of his father. The man was an uneducated farmer who died at the end of a bottle.

I’ll never be him. I’m better. He was a godless man unworthy of God’s love.

A large monitor displayed different faces. Human faces. This meeting was for only those most loyal to the cause and to the Liberi Dei. To God.

Most of the world’s major religious groups were represented in Liberi Dei. Those that mattered, anyway. They couldn’t succeed without a unified front, putting their differences aside for the greater good. God himself called these men and women together.

“Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism—we have people of every faith.” Doctor Lupu pointed to each of the members on the screens. “We’re not an isolated group; we’re everywhere.” He pounded his hand on the table. “Those sinners and collaborators, like Todd Landon and Greg McNeil, can’t stop us.” He made eye contact with each member on each screen as he talked. “We won’t stop until we rid our solar system of Nentraee filth.”

A quick red flash on his monitor let him know the security software created by his friends in Silicon Valley worked.

He glanced up to the ceiling. This room, like all the rooms those assembled were in, held no distinct features. If someone became compromised, there would be nothing for them to describe, no locations to be disclosed, no secrets lost. The nondescript space, implemented by Martha and maintained by Doctor Lupu, proved a wise safety measure.

Doctor Lupu faced the monitor again. “Giving those tall, devil-eared, bumpy-foreheaded demons Mars is not acceptable—we drove the Nentraee from Earth. We can drive them from Mars, from every planet. God promised us domain over not only this world, but our solar system, and we will dominate what is ours. We’re Liberi Dei, and we won’t be stopped or put down like animals.”

Nods and mutters of agreement came from the faces on the monitor.

“Now, my friends, be watchful.” Doctor Lupu wheezed through his words. “God will be sending us more people to join our crusade. Seek them out, but be wary. If Martha taught us anything, it’s to be cautious and look for the right opportunity. One will present itself. God will soon show opportunity to us, especially now with the rush to expand humankind’s presence in space. Our enemies won’t be able to control everything, and then we will attack.”

They’d answered his summoning from all over the world, from all walks of life. After the attack at the United Nations, more and more people didn’t want the Nentraee on Earth. The people had heard God’s call, and the members of Liberi Dei were there to answer, waiting to round up the next group of holy fighters. The loss of Martha was tragic, but what she created lives on and more and more people will answer her challenge.

“Now let us adjourn,” Doctor Lupu finished with a satisfied nod.

My teaser this Tuesday is from Quarry! Book 2 of The Vampire Guard.

Lucas reached up and put his hand on the side of Blair’s neck. “The good news is, you’re a vampire, and this will be healed in a week or two. The bad news is, you’re a vampire, and there isn’t a lot I can do about painkillers.”

Blair licked his lips and nodded. “Quick. Do it quick.”

Lucas nodded. “I’m not without some tricks, though.” He took some diodes from a pack he carried and attached them to Blair’s leg in several spots. “These are electrified. Feel it?” Lucas pressed a tiny button on each one.

“Yes,” Blair said and nodded.

“They’ll block some of the pain. Helping?”

Blair smiled a bit. “It is. Very much, thank you.”

“Okay, now I’m going to straighten the bones of your leg so they heal the right way. Then we’ll get the bleeding stopped and deal with the puncture wound in your back when we’re up top. Ready?”

Jonas knelt on Blair’s other side and quietly took his hand. Blair glanced up at him, then nodded. When Lucas took Blair’s leg and maneuvered it so the bones aligned, Jonas shifted so the majority of his weight was on one knee and hissed out a sharp breath. Blair arched his back and shouted, followed it up with wet, short sobs, and finally passed out.

As soon as Blair was unconscious, Jonas’s demeanor changed. His face relaxed, and he stood up, weight supported on both feet. Breathing evenly, he nodded. When one of them was insentient, the effects they’d feel via their empathic bond greatly decreased. “Now is a good time to get him up top,” Jonas said.

“Can you do this, Forge?” Lucas asked.

Before Jonas could spout something stupid, Declan stepped up. “I’ll go up with you and make sure.” He took Jonas’s arm and walked with him to the rope he’d used to descend. Jonas huffed, but Declan cut him off. “I know that look. Don’t even try to argue.”

Jonas blew out a breath and play-punched Declan’s shoulder. “Thank you.”

    Welcome to My World
    Elizabeth Noble

Mystery, action, chills, and thrills spiced with romance and desire. ELIZABETH NOBLE lives by the adage "I can't not write." She doesn't remember a time when she didn't make up stories and eventually she learned how to put words on a page. Those words turned into books and fan fiction that turned into a genuine love of M/M fiction. A part of every day is spent living in worlds she created that are filled with intrigue and espionage. She has a real love for a good mystery complete with murder and twisty plots as well as all things sci-fi, futuristic, and supernatural.

When she's not chronicling the adventures of her many characters, Elizabeth is a veterinary nurse living in her native Cleveland, Ohio. She has three grown children and now happily shares her little, brick house with two spunky Cardigan Welsh Corgis and their feline sidekicks. Elizabeth is a fan of baseball, basketball (go Cavs and Cleveland Guardians!) and gardening. She can often be found working in her 'outside office' listening to classic rock and plotter her next novel waiting for it to be dark enough to gaze at the stars.

Elizabeth has received a number of amateur writing awards. Since being published, several of her novels have received Honorable Mentions in the Rainbow Awards. Jewel Cave was a runner-up in the Gay Mystery/Thriller category in the 2015 Rainbow Awards. Ringed Love was a winner in the Gay Fantasy Romance category of the 2016 Rainbow Awards.
