My snippet this week is from Shifting Chaos, the final installment of The Sleepless City (series cowritten with Anne Barwell). Declan tripped and would have hit the pavement if it weren’t for Lucas diving in front of him and stopping his fall. “What the hell?” Declan grabbed a fistful of Lucas’s fur to steady himself. As Lucas stood, he pushed Declan upright. As soon as Declan let go of Lucas, his lover’s form returned to human. “Are you alright?” “I…yes…I.” Harsh panting made Declan look down at Moose. The dog was bright-eyed and his tail was wagging, but his tongue hung out the side of his mouth and he was puffing huge breaths. “We should go back,” Declan said softly. “You should change back, you’re naked.” Lucas grinned and looked down at himself. “I am! I guess having the city M.E. being cited for indecent exposure would look bad on my resume.” In the next instant Lucas was a huge wolf again and trotting at Declan’s side as he and Moose walked toward home. Their route home gave them a lovely view of the city skyline. Lights from downtown Boggslake twinkled cheerfully and lifted Declan’s spirits. He really did love this town. “Did you know it was your head detective, Stewie Belle who coined the nickname The Sleepless City?” Declan asked. Two sets of canid ears twitched in his direction. “He, Stewie, was from New York City, though I guess you can tell that by his accent. Anyway, he always said New York might be the city that never sleeps, but Boggslake was a sleepless city.” He reached down and patted Moose’s shoulder. “I always liked that nickname.” Find more diverse snippets from a number of authors in the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group.
