A dark figure moved through the trees along the outcrop’s perimeter. “Look….” Tyler got one hand up and closed his fist around the material of Linden’s coat sleeve. The woman ran through the snow, broadsiding Linden and knocking him away. Linden grabbed her shoulders and rolled, taking her with him. He brought one foot up between them and sent her sprawling on her back in the snow with a powerful kick. Tyler cheered silently. Linden got to his feet a split second before she did and was back to Tyler with barely enough time to position himself so he stood over Tyler’s legs. Linden had his gun out and up, and he shouted at the woman, “Stop. I’ll shoot.” She hesitated, skirted to the side, and pulled something from behind her back. Her hands didn’t waver in the least as she aimed a flare gun at Tyler’s head. “Drop it!” Linden shouted and twisted in her direction. She didn’t so much as flinch. Linden fired, hitting her hand.
