My teaser this week is from For the Long Run. Jay blew out a breath, rolled his eyes, and stepped around Eric. “I don’t need watching.” “I never said—” Eric clamped his mouth shut, deciding it was more prudent to keep up with Jay. “Hunting big game and something like this are two different things. We need to be extra careful.” Eric stepped up beside Jay. They stopped, taking a few seconds for their eyes to adjust to the lower light inside the structure. “Besides, it’s you the thing is driving here, which means it’s probably you it’ll go after first.” Jay glanced sideways at Eric. He didn’t move behind Eric, but he didn’t get any farther away either. Each shining a flashlight in a different direction, they made a slow, steady visual examination of the fabricated cave. Jay leaned in close and whispered, “Do you hear anything?” “No. I sure smell something, though.” Jay nodded. “Me too. It’s awful.” Nudging Jay’s arm, Eric used his chin to point to the right. “How far back does this thing go? It sure didn’t look very deep from the front.” “Maybe it’s made that way on purpose?” Jay squinted into the murky light. “I think there are sections carved out of the cliff, look there.” He looked around, turning so his back brushed Eric’s side. “Nothing else in here.” “For now,” Eric reminded him and moved ahead, walking cautiously over the loose dirt and pebbles littering the ground. He heard the sound of Jay sidestepping closer. A glance back to check on him and he saw Jay look up, pointing the rifle the same way, checking all directions. Satisfied Jay could handle himself and deal with whatever they might find in here, Eric turned his attention to the farthest end of the enclosure, concentrating on where it met the cliff side. “What the hell is that?” Jay hissed in Eric’s ear, making him start. Jay’s movements had been silent enough that Eric hadn’t heard him getting so close. “That’s where the smell is coming from.” For the Long Run is 50% off for the eBook this week.
