“Have you seen the news?” Janelle practically shouted into the phone. Val’s fingers tightened around the phone. It was never good when someone asked that question. “No. Why? What’s happened?” “Is she all right?” Wyatt asked. Val reached over and laid one hand on Wyatt’s thigh and mouthed the word “Yes.” Then he spoke to the phone. “We’re in the car. Lemme turn on the radio.” Val reached for the radio, but Wyatt beat him to it. “Find the news,” he said to Wyatt. Then to Janelle, “Slow down. And sit down. You break up every time you pace around.” Wyatt looked at Val for a second. “What did she say?” “Road!” Val pointed out the front window. Wyatt jerked the steering wheel and the car swerved back into the correct lane. Val said into the phone, “Janelle, we’re fine.” He pushed at the tuner button for the radio. Wyatt frowned and Val shook his head. He was able to hear a few words, but not enough to really piece together what was going on. “Janelle, calm down. This radio is crap and I can’t—we’ll be there in a little bit and—Okay, let me put you on speaker.” He set the phone on his leg. Janelle talked in a rush. “It’s all over everything. I saw it on TV and read it online.” “What?” Val barked. “Charlie, and murders, and dead racehorses!” Janelle said. Wyatt spoke up, “Honey, calm down. We’ll figure this out.” “Just get here,” Janelle sounded exhausted. A far cry from the chipper, chatty woman of a few hours ago. “We’re on our way.” Val disconnected and pocketed the phone. “We’ll have to wait until we either get better reception or can watch it on TV.” The car sped up slightly. Val spent the rest of the trip looking through news online. “Find anything?” Wyatt asked after a few minutes. His knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel. “A few general stories about Charlie and that filly being killed. They all say the same thing—more details are emerging and will be reported shortly. Janelle’s name is in this one. That can’t be good.” Wyatt sighed and nodded. “It usually never is.” Run for the Roses is available in paperback, eBook and Kindle Unlimited.
